Aiden Moffat drove amazing aboard his Mercedes A-Class to set the fastest time of the first practice session of the day at Croft circuit. The teenage put in an astonishing late flying lap to take the top spot. Motorbase’s Andrew Jordan, Team BMR’s Colin Turkington, Team BKR’s Aron Smith and Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram all set brilliant lap times to fill the top places on the timing screens during the opening twenty minutes of the session. This showed the potential each of the makes of car are as they all drive different cars; Jordan in a Ford Focus, Turkington in a Subaru, Smith in a Volkswagen and Ingram in a Toyota.

It did not take long before Sam Tordoff brought BMW into the mix when he put in a blinding lap to jump to second. The Yorkshire based circuit has always been kind to the rear wheel drive BMW’s run by West Surrey Racing over the last few years. Although Tordoff was full of ballast he still managed to bring his Team JCT600 with GardX backed BMW home in third at the end of the session. Many changes occurred on the timing screens late in the session, this was when the flying Scotsman Moffat jumped to first on the timing screens. Andrew Jordan fought off Tordoff to take second with the latter taking third with just 0.077 seconds separating the two. Tom Ingram managed to bring his Toyota Avensis home in fourth ahead of WIX backed racer Adam Morgan in fifth.

Colin Turkington managed to hold on to sixth place on the timing screens ahead of Gordon Shedden in seventh aboard the first of the Honda Civic Type R’s. Aron Smith was only able to manage eighth when the chequered flag came out aboard his Team BKR run Volkswagen CC. Eurotech’s Martin Depper and Daniel Lloyd rounded out the top ten of the competitors.

All thirty two of the cars in the championship took part in the session and all completed and posted flying timed laps. At some point during the session the TLC Racing/RCIB Insurance Racing Toyota Avensis of Chris Smiley stopped around the circuit and had to be recovered after the chequered flag was brought out. The finishing order of the first free practice session was as follows:
