Mercedes AMG Petronas driver Nico Rosberg was once again on top of the times during the second free practice session on Friday afternoon. Once again teammate Lewis Hamilton finished in second place during the rain hit practice session on the Red Bull Ring. Rosberg continued to set the pace around the Austrian circuit as he beat teammate Hamilton by 0.019 seconds in a rain hit second free practice session of the day on Friday. All throughout the session it was Rosberg on top of the timing screens, before the rain came and also during the rain soaked part of the session. Only ten minutes of the session was dry, then the rain hit. Rosberg’s fastest lap time was 1:07.967, only teammate Hamilton was able to get close to the time but nobody was able to beat it.

Sahara Force India’s Nico Hülkenberg was third as he proved what pace the car had. Next up was Sebastian Vettel in his Ferrari just 0.009 seconds slower than Hülkenburg. Daniel Ricciardo was just 0.060 seconds behind in the leading Red Bull Racing entry. Ricciardo and teammate Max Verstappen were the first two to head out onto the track after the rain had passed over, both drivers used the intermediate Pirelli tyres. Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel went out on slick tyres with twenty minutes of the session remaining. Max Verstappen finished the session in seventh behind Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz Jr. Kimi Raikkonen finished in eighth place in the second Ferrari although he found himself off at turn five early in the session just prior to the rain falling.

Williams Martini Racing’s Valtteri Bottas finished the second session in ninth place with Jenson Button beating McLaren-Honda teammate Fernando Alonso to tenth with the latter taking eleventh. Felipe Massa was next up in twelfth aboard his Williams entry. Daniil Kvyat finished in thirteenth in the second Toro Rosso car with Sergio Perez returning to the cockpit for the second session and finishing in fourteenth. The Renault Sport F1 driver pairing of Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer took fifteenth and sixteenth but there was half a second separating the teammates. Pascal Wehrlein finished in seventeenth in his Manor Racing entered car with the Haas of Esteban Gutierrez in eighteenth. Marcus Ericsson finished in nineteenth for Sauber with Romain Grosjean taking twentieth followed by Felipe Nasr and Rio Haryanto in twenty-first and twenty-second.

McLaren-Honda’s Jenson Button, Force India’s Sergio Perez and Renault Sport F1’s Jolyon Palmer were on dry tyres on the circuit when the rain began to fall down, all three had wild moments as they headed round to get to the pit lane to change tyres.
